Outdated Fashion Rules

We’ve all heard the rules: don’t wear white after Labor Day; black and navy should never be worn together. As a wardrobe styling group, we hear it all. We challenge you to enter the Fall 2o24 season in freedom and ignore some of these outdated rules! Read on to learn about the rest of the outdated fashion rules we ignore.

THE SKINNY JEAN CONTROVERSY

If you read our first edition of Cool and Not Cool in 2024, you are well aware of the conditions that follow this rule. While the low-rise, faded, painted-on skinny jeans are no longer relevant, we are seeing a general trend of skinnier pants coming back in style at a high fashion level. We expect this trend to become more and more relevant in the next few years. It’s important to also note that this rule is contingent on your body shape. Some shapes look better in slimmer pants; some look better in wider pants. If you’re struggling to dress your unique silhouette, we can help.

MIXING METALS

Clients are often asking, my belt is a silver buckle, but my jewelry is gold.. does this clash? We love mixing metals; it makes jewelry laying and accessorizing so chic!

MATCHING ACCESSORIES

We hear this common misconception quite often from clients who are focused on matching everything perfectly. While we know this was once the goal, we believe it’s no longer relevant. With the rise of tonal looks, we love showing our clients that they can mix any neutral together (yes, black and brown/ black and navy are exactly what we are referring to).

DRESSING YOUR AGE

We understand there are certain expectations for how women should dress at every age. We challenge you to focus more on your lifestyle, the needs of your daily wardrobe, and what styles you are personally drawn to instead of making age your first priority.

OVER ACCESSORIZING

“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one (accessory) off”—this advice was once given by Coco Chanel. As much as we respect Chanel and her advice, we know piling on the jewelry can be just as chic—think Iris Apfel!

THE UNEXPECTED SHOE

“An elevated shoe is required for _____.” Though a heel looks so chic with a dress or trouser, there are also fun opportunities to choose unexpected footwear. Trousers, dresses, and skirts can also be outfitted with sneakers or flats, depending on the occasion, in the same way you might elevate denim with a heel or boot. It can be an accessible way to step outside of your comfort zone!
